Fallopian tubes and Ovarian health
Ovaries and fallopian tubes are important organs of the female reproductive system. Before proceeding to their related health issues; here is a complete guide about the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
What are ovaries?
Located in the female pelvis area on both sides of the uterus, ovaries are the oval-shaped organs that functioned to produce female gametes, often called āeggsā. They are held in the area by the ligaments which arise from the uterus. Females are born naturally with two ovaries which are just group of tissues containing millions of immature eggs before she reaches to puberty. When ovaries are mature at the age of puberty, they attain the size of a thumb or a ripening grape.
The function of ovaries?
Ovaries play an important role in female fertility. Their major functions are:
- Ovaries are involved to produce eggs in females. The number of eggs which a female possesses for a lifetime, are present at the time of birth but they are not mature. These eggs are stored in the follicles present in the ovaries. A follicle is a structure in which an oocyte or female egg gets nourishment and reaches maturity. The number of eggs goes on declining every month in a female until she reaches menopause or the age of infertility.
- Ovaries release one mature egg (rarely more than one) each month. Mature follicles reach the wall of the ovary where this ripen follicle bursts and releases an egg. The egg is taken by the nearest fallopian tube where fertilization occurs with the sperm. All this happens under the influence of hormones progesterone and estrogen.
- Ovaries produce two important hormones āProgesteroneā and āEstrogenā which are vital for female fertility. Some amount of ārelaxinā and āinhibinā is also produced in the ovaries. Estrogen has further three types that are involved to induce female characteristics in girls during puberty while progesterone is involved to prepare the inner lining of the uterus for conception.
What are fallopian tubes?
Fallopian tubes are also called āUterine tubesā or āoviductā. They are J-shaped tubes that open near the ovaries from one side and are connected to the uterus from another side. They are the pair of slender tubes linked to both ovaries from the uterus, having a length of about 10cm in size.
The function of fallopian tubes
Fallopian tubes are destined to transport the mature egg, released from the ovaries to the uterus. In the presence of sperms, the egg is fertilized, and then this fertilized egg when reaches the uterus, which is implanted for further growth. If the egg is not fertilized, it is washed out from the uterus during menstruation.
The connection between ovaries and fallopian tubes
Fallopian tubes are not permanently attached to ovaries. They have a funnel-shaped opening called āinfundibulumā near the ovary which is covered by ciliated projections called āFimbriaeā. Hormones activate the fimbriae when ovulation is about to happen and increases blood supply to them. When they swell with enhanced blood supply, they reach the ovary and capture the released ovum.
Ovarian and fallopian tube disorders
Issues with normal ovarian health directly have an influence on female fertility. These issues may be;
Ovarian cysts
Generally harmless, they are the fluid-filled sacs that develop in the wall of the ovaries. Sometimes these cysts do not cause any symptoms but in some cases, they may show serious symptoms like pain in the pelvic area, heaviness in the abdomen area, and bloating. In rare cases, the cyst ruptures and causes internal bleeding also can cause ovarian torsion.
Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome
In this condition, many small fluid-filled sacs or follicles develop but they are unable to mature and release eggs regularly. It occurs due to hormonal imbalance and is considered a big reason behind female infertility these days. Its symptoms include irregular or missed periods, maybe prolonged bleeding. It can be treated with medicines
Fallopian tube blockage
Blocked fallopian tube tubes are also one of the common causes of infertility in females. They prevent sperms to reach the released healthy egg, thus hindering conception. Sometimes, the tubes are partially blocked which allows a female to conceive a baby otherwise they need a medicinal treatment to open the blockage.
There are several causes of fallopian tube blockage like;
Endometriosis
Growth of the inner lining of the uterus outside to the fallopian tubes causes the passageway of the egg to block. It is also a painful condition during menstruation.
Pelvic inflammatory diseases
Severe infections in the pelvic area may cause inflammation in the fallopian tubes. This inflammation prevents egg fertilization by sperms.
Uterine fibroids
These are the potentially harmless cysts in the uterus and they may block the entrance of the fertilized egg in the uterus is located at the attachment point of the fallopian tube with the uterus.
Fats deposits
Sometimes itās because of fats deposits in the mouth of the tubes which block the tubes and cause hindrance in pregnancy.
Diagnoses of ovarian and fallopian tube disorders
The symptoms associated with ovarian and fallopian tube disorders range from mild to severe including abdominal pain, bloating, pain on either side left or right where the fallopian tube has some disorder, nausea, and vomiting. A health practitioner can diagnose the condition by asking about symptoms and then performing an ultrasound scan. Hysterosalpingography is a specialized type of X-Ray that can help to identify the fallopian tube blockage.
